Normandy High School Women's Varsity Soccer Holds Steady Against the Eagles
In a challenging face-off at Byers Field on September 10, 2025, the Normandy High School Invaders, the women's varsity soccer team, held the Eagles to a 0-0 draw in what was described as beautiful 70-degree weather. This hard-fought match showcased impressive defensive strategies and goalkeeping, especially considering the health challenges some team members were facing.
The first half was marked by a robust defence where goalkeeper Faith Mathis stood out, shutting down two major counterattacks from the Eagles. Her agility and quick reflexes earned her notable praise, as she leaped 'like a cat' to keep the game even, culminating in a halftime score of 0-0. The defensive efforts from players Keilei, Karley, Brea, Grace, Mya, Zora, and Claire were instrumental as they kept the Eagles at bay throughout the game.
The match continued into the second half without any goals, despite the teams' best efforts. Faith Mathis concluded the game with a total of 23 saves, a testament to her critical role that day. After the game, the sentiments among the Invaders were positive, with a player commenting on the unexpected outcome, "Well, we walked out of here with 1 point today, better than we thought." The normandy coach reflected on the season's surprises and the tough competition provided by the Eagles, noting, "The ladies continue to surprise me this season. We are not out in any game."
Looking ahead, the Invaders are set to face Buckeye at Buckeye High School in Medina on September 17, 2025, as they aim to improve their current record of 3 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw.
