Normandy’s Moore punches ticket to state with dominant district run

Normandy High School’s James Moore put together a breakout performance at the OHSAA District Wrestling Tournament in Perrysburg on Saturday, rolling to a runner-up finish at 215 pounds and securing a berth in the state tournament.

Moore opened his district run in emphatic fashion, needing just one period to finish his first-round bout against Dixon of Massillon Jackson. Controlling the action from the start, Moore secured a first-period pin to advance, setting the tone for what became one of the Invaders’ most impressive post‑season efforts of the year.

The Normandy standout faced a major test in the quarterfinals against the wrestler ranked No. 11 in the state from Oregon Clay. After a scoreless first period, Moore chose to start the second period on bottom, executed a clean reversal, and turned his opponent straight to his back. The sequence led to another pin in the second period, sending Moore into the semifinals and firmly establishing him as one of the top contenders in the 215‑pound bracket.

The semifinal, effectively a match to clinch a state berth, proved to be Moore’s defining moment of the tournament. Facing a Medina Highland opponent with a trip to Columbus on the line, Moore wasted little time. He put the Highland wrestler on his back in the first period, again in the second, and ultimately finished the bout with a pin in the second period. The victory locked up Moore’s spot at the state tournament and guaranteed at least a top‑two district finish.

In the district championship match, Moore ran into the top-ranked 215‑pound wrestler in Ohio from perennial power St. Edward. Despite falling in the final, Moore’s runner‑up performance came against the No. 1 competitor in the state and capped a day in which he recorded three pins and navigated a loaded bracket.

With his district run, Moore moves on to the OHSAA state tournament as one of the Invaders’ premier representatives. His series of bonus‑point wins in Perrysburg underscores the momentum he will carry into Columbus and highlights the continued growth of Normandy’s wrestling program on the postseason stage.
