STERLING, Colo. — Northeastern Junior College opened strong on Hoops Homecoming but could not sustain its early energy, falling 75-57 to Western Nebraska on Saturday night in the final home appearance for the Plainswomen’s sophomore class.

Sophomore forward Daniela Garcia Gasco set the tone early, scoring the first basket of the game on a layup to give NJC the initial lead. The Plainswomen built a 6-2 advantage behind contributions from Garcia Gasco, Riley Phelps and Madison Sepeda, capitalizing on crisp ball movement and early defensive stops. However, Western Nebraska settled in midway through the first quarter and seized control of the scoreboard around the four-minute mark, a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the night.

From that point on, Western Nebraska’s ability to string together scoring runs proved decisive. While the Plainswomen continued to compete, their offense slowed after the opening surge, and Western Nebraska steadily extended the margin over the middle quarters. NJC’s defense forced difficult shots at times, but second-chance opportunities and timely perimeter shooting allowed the visitors to keep the Plainswomen at arm’s length.

Garcia Gasco, named DDC Player of the Game in her final home appearance, led Northeastern with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, providing consistent production on both ends of the floor. Sepeda added 12 points, giving the Plainswomen another reliable scoring option on the perimeter. Off the bench, forward Markella Psarra delivered a key spark with 9 points, helping NJC stay within reach during stretches when the offense needed a lift.

Coach Moton
Disappointed with the energy the team had for this game. Playing like this will not put you in position to win many games.

On the glass, guard Veronica Baray made her presence felt, pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds to help the Plainswomen battle inside. Playmaker Monique Sena directed the offense with 5 assists, working to get teammates open looks against Western Nebraska’s pressure. Despite the final margin, those contributions underlined the competitiveness and resolve of a group playing its last game in front of the home crowd this season.

The matchup doubled as a sendoff for Northeastern’s three sophomores, on an emotional Hoops Homecoming night. For Garcia Gasco and the team’s other second-year players, the game marked a final opportunity to represent the Plainswomen on their home floor, adding significance to every possession despite the outcome.

With region play now complete, Northeastern turns its attention to the postseason. The Plainswomen will await seeding and their opponent for the opening round of the Region IX playoffs, looking to carry the positive elements of Saturday’s performance — including strong individual efforts and stretches of effective team play — into the next phase of their season.
