Northeastern edges North Platte 70-69 with final-second defensive stand

STERLING, Colo. — Northeastern Junior College men’s basketball closed out a tight home contest with a defensive stand, holding North Platte scoreless on the final possession to secure a 70-69 victory Thursday night at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.

Clinging to a one-point lead in the closing seconds, the Plainsmen forced a contested miss and sealed the win when Alan Acevedo Dagda tracked down the game’s final rebound as time expired. The stop capped a gritty defensive performance in which Northeastern limited the Knights to 39.3% shooting from the field and 35.3% from 3-point range.

Northeastern relied on a balanced attack to edge North Platte in a game that stayed within a few possessions most of the way. Ethan Carter led the Plainsmen on the glass, finishing with 11 points and 8 rebounds while helping control the interior against a physical Knights frontcourt. Dodge Davis matched the frontcourt effort with 10 points and 6 rebounds, giving Northeastern a reliable inside presence at both ends.

On the perimeter, playmaking and ball movement were key. Quis Davis directed the offense with 10 points and a team-high 6 assists, consistently creating quality looks and keeping North Platte’s defense in rotation.
