Northeastern Junior College turned a halftime deadlock into a convincing road win Saturday, using a stifling second-half defensive effort and hot perimeter shooting to defeat McCook 84-66 in McCook, Neb.

Tied 37-37 at the break, the Plainsmen clamped down on the defensive end in the final 20 minutes, holding the Indians to just 29 points after halftime. Northeastern coupled that effort with its best 3-point shooting performance of the season, knocking down a season-high 12 shots from beyond the arc to create separation and control the final stretch.

Offensively, the Plainsmen rode career nights from guards Dodge Davis and Jakobe Jones. Davis led all scorers with 31 points, attacking in transition and in the half court to consistently put pressure on the McCook defense. Jones complemented him on the perimeter, drilling six 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 23 points, providing repeated momentum swings each time McCook threatened to answer.

The decisive push came early in the second half, when Northeastern turned stops into points and strung together a key run out of the locker room. With the game still tightly contested, the Plainsmen’ perimeter defense forced contested looks and limited second-chance opportunities, igniting transition chances that Davis and Jones converted into baskets. As Northeastern’s lead grew into double digits, the Indians struggled to match the Plainsmen’ pace and spacing on the offensive end.

Playmaking and balance also stood out in the win. Quis Davis orchestrated the offense effectively, finishing with eight assists and six rebounds while helping keep the floor spaced for shooters. His ability to penetrate and find teammates on the perimeter was a key factor in Northeastern’s 12 made 3-point field goals, as the Plainsmen repeatedly generated clean looks off drive-and-kick action.

Defensively, Northeastern’s improvement from the first half to the second half was the difference. After conceding 37 points before the break, the Plainsmen tightened their rotations, improved ball pressure on the perimeter and limited breakdowns in pick-and-roll coverage. That collective effort held McCook to 29 points over the final two quarters, allowing Northeastern to methodically extend the margin and close out the game without a late rally from the hosts.

With the 84-66 victory, the Plainsmen added a strong road result to their late-season résumé, highlighted by career scoring efforts from Davis and Jones and a defensive performance that set the tone after halftime. The showing in McCook gives Northeastern momentum heading into the final stretch of its schedule and reinforces the impact of its perimeter shooting and second-half defense.
