Sena’s 25 points lead Northeastern JC past Trinidad State, 84–65

STERLING, Colo. — Northeastern Junior College seized control from the opening tip and never let Trinidad State back in it, riding a career night from Monique Sena to an 84–65 home victory Friday at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.

The Plainswomen opened the game with an 8-0 run in the first minute, setting the tone for a dominant performance. Once Northeastern built its early cushion, Trinidad State never drew closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the hosts maintained a double-digit advantage throughout.

Sena powered Northeastern’s offense, tying her career high with 25 points while adding six rebounds. The guard consistently found gaps in the defense, attacking the lane and knocking down perimeter looks to keep the Plainswomen in control. Her scoring presence helped Northeastern answer every minor surge Trinidad State attempted to mount.

Northeastern also received balanced production across the lineup. Forward Daniela Garcia Gasco finished with 18 points and eight rebounds, giving the Plainswomen a reliable interior option on both ends of the floor. Guard Veronica Baray added 10 points and seven rebounds, contributing on the glass and in transition, while forward Markella Psarra chipped in 12 points to round out a strong offensive effort.

The Plainswomen’s early defensive intensity was critical in building the decisive lead. Northeastern’s pressure created rushed shots and limited clean looks for Trinidad State, fueling fast-break opportunities off of long rebounds. That defensive edge, combined with efficient execution in the half court, allowed Northeastern to dictate tempo and keep the Trojans from establishing rhythm.

Even as the game settled in after the opening-minute surge, Northeastern continued to trade stops for scores, methodically extending the margin across all four quarters. With multiple players contributing in double figures and controlling the boards, the Plainswomen kept Trinidad State at bay and closed out a convincing conference win on their home floor.

Northeastern, now building momentum in the heart of its schedule, is scheduled to return to action Jan. 10 at Western Nebraska before continuing Region IX play later in the month and into February.
