Saint Ignatius powered into the district final Wednesday night, sweeping Shaker Heights 3-0 in a Division district semifinal. The Wildcats won by set scores of 25-14, 25-6, 25-16, improving to 21-2 overall and sending plenty of home support home with another confident postseason performance.
The Wildcats set the tone quickly, even after a competitive opening stretch in the first set. Setter Andrew Brobbey helped Saint Ignatius seize control with a strong run from the service line, including consecutive aces that pushed the lead to 15-8 after another ace had made it 13-8. Gavin Schafer, the outside hitter wearing No. 34, continued to pressure Shaker Heights throughout the night. He finished with 16 kills with a dominant .842 hitting efficiency, five aces and two blocks. Carson Nekic also teamed with Schafer on a block that stretched the first-set margin to 19-10, and Frank Jacono IV closed the opener with a kill for the 25-14 finish.
Set 2 was the Wildcats at their sharpest. Brobbey opened the set with another ace, and Saint Ignatius never let its energy dip while building a 12-3 advantage on a Schafer ace. The offense stayed balanced and efficient, with Brobbey directing a unit that hit .566 as a team. Brobbey totaled 24 assists, four aces, four digs and a block, while middle blocker Frank Jacono IV added eight kills with a sparkling .889 hitting efficiency. Schafer delivered the final spike of the set, and the Wildcats rolled to a 25-6 win to move within one set of the match.
Saint Ignatius stayed composed in the third set as Shaker Heights tried to extend the night. Schafer delivered another key burst from the service line, recording an ace at 16-11 and then another moments later to make it 17-11. Brobbey added a late block to push the lead to 20-14, and the Wildcats continued to win points with service pressure and clean attacking. The match ended when Saint Ignatius served for an ace on match point, sealing the 25-16 set and the straight-set victory.
The semifinal also carried a few memorable personal milestones. Three players made their varsity debuts for Saint Ignatius: outside hitters Joel Serrano and Josh Zorc, and middle blocker Liam Meyerhoeffer. Their appearances added to the celebratory feel of a night that showcased both the Wildcats' front-line production and the program's depth. Other contributions came from Henry van Ginkel with six kills, Ethan Rossetti with four kills, Brandon Walrod with two aces and six assists, Ryan Smola with an ace, and steady defensive work from Simon in serve receive and the back row.
With the win, Saint Ignatius advances to the district final Friday, May 15, at home against Eastlake North at 6 PM. If Wednesday was any indication, the Wildcats will carry plenty of momentum into that next postseason test.
