Saint Ignatius Wildcats Defeat Xavier Knights in Freshmen Rugby Contest

The Saint Ignatius High School freshman rugby team overpowered the Xavier High School Knights 32-0 on Saturday, May 11, in a non-conference gameup that showcased the Wildcats' tenacity on a cold and rainy day at Penn State University. The fresh-faced Wildcats squad delivered a resounding show of skill and teamwork amid challenging weather, with Preston Bucsanyi leading the charge by scoring an impressive hat-trick of tries. Danny Longstreet and Coen Leucke also successfully put the ball down over the tryline, while Leucke added one conversion on a day that was difficult for goalkicking. Quinn Ferris was a standout performer, adding to the scoreboard and eventually earning the title of player of the game. He played solid defense and reeled off several important runs, often helping the Wildcats turn the tables on field position. The Wildcats' resolute goalline defense put its hand up on a couple of occasions. With the score 10-0 in the first half and Xavier dangerously close to narrowing the lead, the Wildcats' unyielding defense adamantly held off their opponents. Add to this a specific defensive plan designed to contain Xavier's most dangerous runners worked well and was executed almost flawlessly by the players. Ben Stefan, Xavier Marshall, and Jake Degrandis received accolades for their roles in the game. Stefan's adept defense in the flank position, Marshall's indomitable tackles when thrust into play as a prop, and Degrandis' pivotal distribution skills at center all contributed to the Wildcats' decisive win. Coach Tony Vegh commended his team on both execution and effort. "We the coaches are very proud of how the players executed the game plan and how hard they worked, especially on defense," Vegh said.
