St. Ignatius Wildcats Blank Xavier Saints 29-0 in JV Rugby Clash

Facing off against Xavier High School at Penn State University on May 11, the Saint Ignatius High School junior varsity rugby team, known as the Wildcats, triumphed during a day when the two schools faced off in four separate rugby games of different levels. The Wildcats overcame the cold, rainy conditions and the initial stalwart defense from Xavier to log a 29-0 shutout victory. The tightly contested game showcased a grinding opening. It wasn't until Charlie Worthington shattered Xavier's defense, securing the game's opening try to put St. Ignatius on the scoreboard. This breakthrough set the tone for the rest of the game. Worthington wasn't the only player to leave his mark on the game. The shifty Siba Beavogui and hard-running Levi Hoffman also made significant contributions as they too scored crucial tries. The Wildcats' relentless performance was rounded out by Marcelo Woodberry, who added to the point tally, and Hoffman, who was essential in converting multiple scores. The team's solid attacking display was fortified by a formidable defensive outing that kept Xavier off the scoreboard, preserving the shutout victory. Notable in this winning cause was Matthew Calleri, who proved his adaptability by moving into the forwards for the first time and performing well. Furthermore, Jake Shepard's influence was felt throughout the game, as his leadership from his hooker position has been a feature throughout the season. Coach Greg Barbiaux acknowledged the challenge that the Xavier team presented to the Wildcats, stating, "The game was closer than the score indicates. Xavier played really tough and they gave us probably our toughest game of the season." The Wildcats look to build on this victory as they move forward in their season.
