Saint Ignatius opened its season in emphatic fashion Friday night, sweeping Walsh Jesuit 3-0 in the home opener at Sullivan Gym in Cleveland. The Wildcats controlled the match from the first serve, rolling to set wins of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-22 to secure the straight-sets victory.
Saint Ignatius set the tone early behind a strong serving run and efficient attacking in the first set. The Wildcats built separation quickly and closed out a 25-11 win, powered in large part by Gavin Schafer, who delivered four aces and contributed four combined kills in the opening frame. The early dominance on serve forced Walsh Jesuit into constant scramble situations and set the rhythm for the night.
The Wildcats were even more decisive in the second set, using another extended serving stretch to break the set open. Andrew Brobbey took over from the service line, scoring five points on serve, including two aces, as Saint Ignatius cruised to a 25-8 result. With the Wildcats’ serve pressure pinning Walsh Jesuit in serve-receive, Saint Ignatius was able to stay in system, attack in rhythm and keep the visitors from mounting any sustained rally.
Walsh Jesuit responded with its best stretch of play in the third set, tightening its serve-receive and pushing the frame deep. Saint Ignatius, however, maintained composure in the closing points to finish off a 25-22 win and the match sweep. Ethan Rossetti stepped up in the final set with multiple combined kills and two aces, helping the Wildcats answer each Walsh Jesuit push and protect the lead down the stretch.
For the match, Saint Ignatius totaled 29 kills and 16 aces, showcasing a balanced offense backed by aggressive serving. Jack Ragon and Rossetti shared the team lead with six combined kills apiece, while Schafer added five combined kills to go with his strong work at the line. Ragon was highly efficient, finishing with a .857 hitting efficiency and adding two digs, while Rossetti recorded three aces and 13 combined kill attempts to pace the attack.
Schafer’s all-around impact helped anchor the performance, as he finished with five combined kills, four aces and seven total points scored on serve. Behind that production, the Wildcats also registered 19 digs as a team, limiting extended Walsh Jesuit runs and turning defensive stops into transition opportunities. Even without a recorded block in the team statistics, Saint Ignatius controlled the net through consistent attacking and disciplined defense.
The sweep of Walsh Jesuit gives Saint Ignatius a strong start to the campaign in front of the home crowd at Sullivan Gym. With the home opener successfully navigated, the Wildcats will look to build on their serving pressure and balanced offense as the schedule turns quickly to upcoming matches, including key early tests that will further shape the trajectory of their season.
