Barkalow’s five goals power St. Charles past St. Patrick in IHSA Sectional quarterfinal
St. Charles Boys Water Polo is moving on.
St. Charles co-op boys water polo opened the postseason with an 8-3 victory over St. Patrick on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the IHSA Sectional at St. Patrick. The decisive edge came from a balanced effort built around a big night from Barkalow, who scored five goals, and a steady defensive performance in front of goalkeeper Nate Park, who finished with 16 saves.
For St. Charles program, the result delivered exactly the kind of playoff start a team hopes for, efficient offense, disciplined defense and timely stops whenever momentum needed to be secured. Barkalow led the attack throughout the afternoon, accounting for more than half of the teams scoring output. Li, Williams and He each added a goal, giving the squad four different scorers in the win.
The numbers told the story of control in the water. Park’s 16-save effort anchored the back end and helped limit St. Patrick to just three goals, a standout postseason total for the defense. Every possession he turned away gave St. Charles another opportunity to settle in, and the team made those chances count with enough finishing touch to steadily build separation.
Wednesday’s quarterfinal win also carried immediate postseason significance. With the victory, St. Charles advances to Friday night’s IHSA Regional semifinal against York. That match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Fenwick, giving the team a chance to carry their strong opening-round form into the next stage of the bracket.
If St. Charles can bring the same combination of shot-making and defensive poise they showed against the Shamrocks, they will head into Friday with confidence. An eight-goal team effort, a five-goal performance from Barkalow and 16 saves from Park made for a strong playoff statement, and it earned St. Charles another night to keep the season going.
