Fighting Saints blank North Stars 3-0 behind Wollenberg’s big night
St. Charles East delivered another strong statement Tuesday night, shutting out St. Charles North 3-0 in Batavia behind a decisive first-half surge and a standout all-around performance from Sophia Wollenberg. The Fighting Saints scored twice before the break, added an insurance goal in the second half and leaned on a steady defensive effort to improve to 15-0-4 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play.
The breakthrough came at 38:28 of the first half, when Mya Leon finished a chance created by Wollenberg to put St. Charles East in front. The Saints struck again at 9:14, this time with Josy Pierce converting another Wollenberg assist. That quick two-goal cushion gave St. Charles East control of the match and rewarded a sharp opening half in which the Saints created chances and kept North from finding any rhythm in the attack.
Wollenberg was not done. At 18:46 of the second half, she found the net herself on an assist from Qori Strotkamp, stretching the lead to 3-0 and effectively putting the match out of reach. Wollenberg factored into all three goals, finishing with one goal and two assists in one of the Saints’ most complete attacking performances of the season. Leon added a goal of her own, Pierce supplied the second tally and Strotkamp helped spark the final scoring sequence.
The defensive side was just as impressive. Goalkeeper Mia Olenek played all 80 minutes, made one save and preserved the clean sheet, while the back line limited St. Charles North’s quality looks throughout both halves. With the Saints ahead 2-0 at halftime and still organized after the break, the group never allowed momentum to swing.
Even without additional standout notes in the author-supplied sections, the match summary was clear in the way St. Charles East controlled the key moments. The Fighting Saints turned finishing chances into goals, received playmaking from Wollenberg, got a composed full-match effort from Olenek and continued the kind of balanced soccer that has defined this unbeaten run. Tuesday’s rivalry result added another confident chapter to an already impressive season.
