St. Charles East made it three wins in three tries over Batavia this season, and this one delivered a championship, as the Fighting Saints rolled to a 53-36 victory over the Bulldogs to capture the IHSA Class 4A regional title Friday night at St. Charles East High School.
The decisive stretch came in the second half, when the Fighting Saints tightened their defense and turned a competitive game into a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish. St. Charles East limited Batavia’s looks in the half court, cleaned the glass and converted on the other end to steadily extend the margin and put the regional championship out of reach.
Offensively, the Fighting Saints were led by a balanced one-two punch. Kathlyn Bainbridge and Brooklyn Schilb each finished with 18 points, pacing an attack that consistently found ways to score in the lane and at the free-throw line. Their production gave St. Charles East a reliable scoring foundation in each quarter, particularly as the Saints pulled away after halftime.
St. Charles East set the tone early with a strong opening quarter, building an initial cushion behind active defense and transition opportunities. The Saints pressured passing lanes, forced hurried possessions from Batavia and turned several of those mistakes into points. That early edge allowed St. Charles East to play from in front the rest of the night, with the Bulldogs unable to mount a sustained run to threaten the lead.
Batavia battled to stay within striking distance through the middle quarters, but the Fighting Saints’ defensive consistency proved to be the difference. St. Charles East held the Bulldogs to single-digit scoring in multiple stretches, contesting perimeter shots and rotating quickly to protect the paint. When Batavia was forced to extend its defense in the fourth quarter, the Saints took advantage with patient ball movement and high-percentage looks to close out the game.
The regional title continues a strong postseason push for a St. Charles East team that entered the playoffs with momentum following an 18-12 regular season and an 11-3 mark in DuKane Conference play. Earlier in the week, the Saints advanced with a regional semifinal win over West Chicago, a night that also featured Addison Schilb reaching the 1,000-point career milestone.
With the regional championship secured, St. Charles East now turns its attention to the IHSA Sectional round. The Fighting Saints will travel to Bartlett High School on Feb. 24 for a 7:30 p.m. sectional semifinal matchup against the winner of the Lake Park Regional, looking to extend their postseason run and build on the momentum from another convincing performance.
