GENEVA, Ill. — St. Charles East’s Fighting Saints varsity dance team is state-bound after placing fifth at the IHSA Sectional on Saturday at Geneva High School, earning a qualifying spot in next week’s IHSA State Championship in Bloomington.

Competing in a deep sectional field, the Saints delivered a polished routine that combined synchronized turns, sharp arm lines and layered formation changes designed to maximize both technical and artistic scores. From the opening formation, the group established clean spacing and timing, setting a steady tone that helped them navigate a high-pressure environment with minimal visible errors.

The heart of the routine featured a series of fast-paced direction changes and level variations, with dancers moving seamlessly between floor work and elevated lines. Judges typically look for variety and control in these transitions, and the Saints’ choreography emphasized group unison during complex footwork sequences, as well as musical accents that highlighted key beats in the music. Their ability to stay together through these demanding sections appeared to be a strength in a tightly packed standings table.

Stunt-style elements and technical dance skills also played a role in the Saints’ sectional showing. While IHSA dance does not include traditional cheer stunting, the routine leaned on visual “stunt-like” moments — such as lift-inspired partner work, quick directional ripples and high-impact jumps — to draw the crowd and judges’ attention. Turning sections, including multiple consecutive pirouettes and synchronized turns in various facings, underscored the team’s control and helped stabilize the routine’s overall execution score.

The closing segment of the performance was built around strong musicality. A sustained energy push through the final counts, coupled with a clean ending and held pose, likely helped the Saints separate themselves just enough to secure fifth place and stay on the favorable side of the sectional cutoff for state qualification.

The fifth-place finish continues a competitive January stretch for St. Charles East, which has navigated invitationals and the DuKane Conference Championship in the lead-up to the state series. With a spot at the IHSA State Championship now secured, the Saints turn their attention to refining details — from synchronization and facials to transitions and endurance — as they prepare to face the state’s top programs in Bloomington next week.

Advancing out of sectionals gives the program another shot on one of the biggest stages in Illinois high school dance, and provides an opportunity to build on Saturday’s performance with adjustments aimed at climbing the standings at state.
