St. Charles East boys basketball opened IHSA Class 4A regional play with a hard-fought road win Monday night, holding off Prosser for a 54-50 victory at Prosser High School in Chicago to advance to a matchup with Glenbard North.
The Fighting Saints built a working margin with a decisive stretch in the second half, then closed the game at the free-throw line and with key defensive stops in the final minute. Prosser trimmed the deficit to a single possession late in the fourth quarter, but St. Charles East answered with composed half-court offense and secure rebounding to keep the Falcons from getting a tying shot.
St. Charles East set the tone early by controlling tempo and limiting second-chance opportunities. The Saints forced multiple early turnovers, turning them into transition points to grab the lead after the first quarter and carry that momentum into halftime. Prosser responded with a push of its own out of the locker room, briefly seizing momentum behind a couple of perimeter baskets before the Saints steadied with a key run that restored a two-possession advantage heading to the fourth.
Down the stretch, the Saints’ defense was the difference. St. Charles East strung together consecutive stops in the final two minutes, contesting drives and closing out on shooters while securing critical defensive rebounds. On the other end, the Saints executed in the half court, using clock and converting enough at the line to keep Prosser chasing multiple possessions until the final horn.
The balanced effort allowed St. Charles East to navigate Prosser’s late pressure and home court. The Saints handled full-court pressure without significant turnovers in the closing minute to hang on for the win.
With the 54-50 win, St. Charles East moves on to face Glenbard North at 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Charles North. The Saints will look to build on their opening-round performance, leaning again on their defensive intensity and late-game composure as they try to extend their postseason run.
