Fighting Saints Flag FB Hold Off Glenbard North 13-12 in Overtime
The St. Charles East Fighting Saints converted their overtime opportunity and stopped Glenbard North on its ensuing attempt to secure a 13-12 girls flag football victory Monday in Carol Stream.
The Saints and Panthers traded scores during a closely contested game, finishing regulation tied at 12. Neither team could create separation before the end of regulation, sending the game to an overtime format in which each side received one opportunity to attempt an extra-point conversion.
St. Charles East took advantage of its chance, scoring the point that produced a 13-12 lead. The Saints then turned to their defense with the outcome at stake. Glenbard North had an opportunity to answer and extend the game, but St. Charles East held off the Panthers’ conversion attempt to finish the road win.
The decisive stop capped a strong situational performance by the Saints. After battling through a tied regulation, the offense executed on its only overtime snap and the defense responded immediately. The sequence allowed St. Charles East to turn a 12-12 deadlock into a one-point victory without giving Glenbard North another possession.
The game was played in partly cloudy conditions with a temperature of 68 degrees and an 8 mph wind. With no individual statistics available, the Saints’ collective execution in overtime stood as the difference in a game decided by the narrowest possible margin.
St. Charles East will remain on the road for its next game, visiting Geneva at 5 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Sept. 16.
