SAINT CHARLES, Ill. - St Charles East High School opened with a touchdown drive and kept building, defeating Elk Grove 42-21 in the opening round of the IHSA playoffs Friday, October 23, in Elk Grove Village. The Saints stretched their advantage to 35-7 with an early third-quarter touchdown.

The opening possession gave the Saints a quick 7-0 lead and set the pace for a productive first half. They continued scoring on their way to a 28-7 halftime advantage, giving Elk Grove a three-touchdown deficit to overcome after the break.

Rather than leave room for an immediate comeback, the Saints struck quickly in the third quarter. Their defense also held Elk Grove to seven points through three quarters, allowing the Saints to carry a four-touchdown cushion into the final quarter.

A fourth-quarter touchdown pushed the lead to 42-7 as the Saints made the most of their playoff chance. Many players got to experience the postseason atmosphere before two late Elk Grove touchdowns trimmed the final margin to 21 points without threatening the outcome.

The victory secured another week of postseason football and a road trip for the next round. The Saints play next at Harlem HS on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the IHSA playoffs.
