Fighting Saints pour in 10 goals to rout Hampshire
St. Charles East kept its electric start to the season rolling Monday night, overwhelming Hampshire 10-1 behind a fast first half and a wave of balanced scoring. The Fighting Saints put the match away early with a 5-0 halftime lead, then kept the pressure on to improve to 8-0-1 overall.
The decisive stretch came in the opening half, when St. Charles East scored four times in roughly 13 minutes and never let Hampshire settle in. Anika Dodrill opened the scoring at 31:04 off an assist from Sophia Wollenberg. Wollenberg then took over, converting a penalty kick at 29:31 before adding two more goals, one assisted by Averie Foulkes at 21:15 and another from Josy Pearce at 18:15. By the time Mya Leon scored off a Qori Strotkamp assist with 3:42 left in the half, the Fighting Saints were firmly in command at 5-0.
The attack stayed sharp after halftime. Leon struck again at 32:14, once more set up by Strotkamp, and Reese Kyle followed at 31:06 on a helper from Leon. Wollenberg completed a four-goal night at 15:00 with an assist from Lilli Margewich, showing the kind of finishing touch that powered the Saints throughout the evening. Leon added her third goal at 3:08 off a Wollenberg assist, and Strotkamp capped the scoring at 1:35, finishing a chance created by Leon.
The standouts were all over the field for St. Charles East. Wollenberg finished with four goals and an assist, while Leon delivered a hat trick and two assists in another dynamic all-around performance. Strotkamp added a goal and two assists, Dodrill scored once and assisted on the opener, and the Saints also got valuable contributions from Foulkes, Pearce, Margewich and Kyle as the attack continued to showcase its depth.
Mia Olenek went the full 80 minutes in goal and made one save while allowing one goal. Even with Hampshire finding the net once in the second half, the Fighting Saints controlled the match from start to finish with organized defending, relentless pressure and efficient finishing. Coming off a 9-0 win over Larkin, St. Charles East carried that momentum straight into another emphatic road performance, this time with its highest goal total of the season.
