Fighting Saints race past Lake Park behind fast start and faceoff control

Darren Howard | St Charles East High School | Apr 29, 2026

St. Charles East wasted little time taking control Wednesday, building a 9-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and riding that surge to another conference win over Lake Park at home. The decisive stretch came early, when the Fighting Saints turned faceoff wins, ground balls and balanced finishing into a lopsided opening quarter that set the tone for the rest of the night.

It was the kind of complete offensive effort that has become a strength for the Saints. Senior captain Chase Isaacson directed the attack with 3 goals and 6 assists, consistently initiating possessions and finding teammates in space. Christian Hirniak added 3 goals and 2 assists, while Jack Galivan finished four times as St. Charles East kept pressure on the Lancers with wave after wave of scoring threats. Frank Solare scored twice and added an assist, Anthony Solare added a goal, and freshman Johnny Humes capped the night with his first varsity goal in the second half, a memorable moment for the program and the home crowd.

The Saints' ability to control possession was just as important as the finishing. Alex Wilko delivered another dominant outing at the faceoff stripe, winning 18 of 23 draws, a 78 percent clip that repeatedly gave St. Charles East extra opportunities and limited Lake Park's chances to settle in. Wilko also filled up the stat sheet with 3 goals, 1 assist and 12 ground balls, impacting the game in nearly every phase. His work on draws and loose balls helped the Saints extend possessions and keep the tempo where they wanted it.

That first-quarter burst effectively decided the game. St. Charles East came out sharp, moved the ball cleanly and capitalized on its chances, quickly opening separation at 9-1. With Isaacson quarterbacking the offense and multiple finishers converting, the Saints showed the kind of depth that makes them difficult to defend over four quarters. The empty author-supplied notes on standouts, key moments and game summary were reflected in the game data itself, which pointed clearly to a team-wide effort built on fast offense and possession dominance.

On a damp evening with light rain showers and temperatures in the upper 50s at Norris Stadium, the Fighting Saints still played with pace and confidence. The win added another strong chapter to the team's season and highlighted the formula that can carry St. Charles East deep into the stretch run, a powerful faceoff presence, unselfish offense and contributions from veterans and younger players alike. The night's final signature moment belonged to Humes, whose first varsity goal gave the celebration one more lift before the Saints closed out another impressive conference performance.
