Fighting Saints Rally for 2-2 Draw Against Hinsdale Central at Plainfield Invitational

Darren Howard | St Charles East High School | Apr 11, 2026

St. Charles East erased a two-goal deficit in the first half Saturday and came away with a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Hinsdale Central at the Plainfield Invitational in Plainfield. The decisive swing came in the closing stretch of the opening half, when Mya Leon cut the margin with 17:45 left and Sophia Wollenberg buried a penalty kick with 2:15 remaining to pull the Fighting Saints level.

Hinsdale Central struck first at 32:15 and added another goal at 27:05, putting the Saints in an early hole. St. Charles East answered with the kind of composure that has defined its strong start. Leon finished the team’s first goal off an assist from Anika Dodrill, then Wollenberg converted from the spot late in the half to cap the response and send the match into halftime tied 2-2.

From there, the match turned into a defensive battle. Neither side found a breakthrough in the second half, and the Saints leaned on goalkeeper Mia Olenek to preserve the draw. Olenek played all 80 minutes and made five saves while allowing two goals, delivering another steady performance in net as St. Charles East kept Hinsdale Central off the board after halftime.

Leon and Wollenberg continued to provide the finishing touch for an attack that has produced throughout the season, while Dodrill added another important play in the buildup with her assist on Leon’s goal. The Saints also showed resilience after conceding twice early, settling into the match and creating enough pressure to climb back even before the break.

The draw moved St. Charles East to 8-0-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play. While the winning streak did not grow Saturday afternoon, the Fighting Saints again showed why they have been one of the area’s most reliable teams, responding to adversity quickly and locking things down over the final 40 minutes.
