Fighting Saints settle for 2-2 draw with Wheaton Warrenville South after fast first-half finish

St. Charles East struck twice in the first half and had a chance to protect an early edge, but Wheaton Warrenville South answered late to force a 2-2 draw Thursday at Norris Stadium. The Fighting Saints stayed unbeaten with the result, moving to 8-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.

The decisive stretch for St. Charles East came before halftime. Sophia Wollenberg opened the scoring on a penalty kick with 20:37 left in the first half, giving the Saints an early spark on their home field. Wheaton Warrenville South pulled even at the 13:00 mark, but the Saints responded quickly. With 3:58 remaining before the break, Anika Dodrill finished a setup from Tatum Smith to restore a 2-1 advantage and send St. Charles East into halftime in front.

That sequence captured much of what has made the Fighting Saints so dangerous this season, timely finishing, pressure in key moments and the ability to answer when an opponent pushes back. Wollenberg delivered in a high-pressure spot from the penalty mark, while Dodrill's goal highlighted the Saints' sharp attacking connection with Smith on the assist.

Wheaton Warrenville South kept pressing in the second half, and goalkeeper Mia Olenek turned in one of the Saints' biggest performances of the night. Olenek played all 80 minutes and made eight saves, repeatedly helping St. Charles East hold its narrow lead. Wheaton Warrenville South finally broke through with 31:32 remaining in the second half, leveling the match at 2-2.

Even in a draw, the Saints showed the resilience and balance that have fueled their strong start. The back line and Olenek absorbed sustained pressure, Wollenberg and Dodrill supplied the goals, and Smith added an important assist in a match that demanded composure from start to finish. Against a quality opponent, St. Charles East added another competitive result to an impressive early-season run.
