Fighting Saints Soccer Capture Regional Championship With 2-0 Shutout of Rockford Jefferson
SAINT CHARLES, Ill. - St Charles East High School secured the IHSA regional championship with a 2-0 victory over Rockford Jefferson on Friday, Oct. 23, in Machesney Park, getting the decisive goal from Brendan Szerlong in the 30th minute.
Anthony Sanfilippo supplied the assist on Szerlong’s opening goal, giving the Fighting Saints a breakthrough in the first half. That finish provided the only scoring before the break, sending St Charles East into halftime with a 1-0 advantage and leaving Jefferson needing an equalizer.
Sam Arville extended the lead in the 49th minute, scoring on a free kick to make it 2-0. The set-piece finish gave the Saints a two-goal cushion in the second half, adding to the first-half combination between Szerlong and Sanfilippo.
Goalkeeper Jason Striegel handled the full 80 minutes and made two saves without allowing a goal. With a one-goal lead to protect before halftime and a larger margin after Arville’s strike, Striegel and the Saints’ defense kept Jefferson off the scoreboard through both halves.
The regional title added another championship to the Saints’ season. St Charles East also claimed the DuKane Conference championship with a 6-1-0 conference record, pairing that league achievement with a postseason crown earned through two goals and a clean sheet against Jefferson.
