Fighting Saints Soccer Season Ends on Penalties After Scoreless Sectional Semifinal

SAINT CHARLES, Ill. - St Charles High School battled South Elgin through 100 scoreless minutes before falling 4-3 in a penalty shootout in an IHSA sectional semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Huntley. Goalkeeper Jason Striegel recorded six saves for the Fighting Saints. The match remained 0-0 through regulation and two overtime sessions, leaving penalties to decide which team advanced.

Neither side broke through in the first half, and the teams reached halftime level at 0-0. The second half brought no change to the score, sending the contest beyond regulation. St Charles then held South Elgin scoreless through the first overtime and repeated that defensive effort in the second extra session.

Striegel played all 100 minutes without conceding a goal, anchoring a shutout that extended across all four segments of play. South Elgin's decisive edge came only in the shootout, where its four successful penalties edged the Saints' three. The shootout settled advancement without changing the scoreless match total.

The sectional appearance followed two championship achievements for the Fighting Saints. St Charles claimed the DuKane Conference championship with a 6-1-0 conference record and added a regional championship before reaching the semifinal. Those titles highlighted a campaign that carried the Saints into sectional competition.
