Fighting Saints Softballedge Fremd 1-0 to claim IHSA Sectional title

Darren Howard | St Charles East High School | May 30, 2026

St. Charles East is heading to the Super-sectional after a crisp, hard-earned 1-0 victory over Fremd on Saturday, powered by a dominant outing from Hannah Wulf and a breakthrough run in the fifth inning.

The Fighting Saints won the IHSA Sectional championship by leaning on pitching, patience and timely execution. In a tense game that stayed scoreless deep into the game, St. Charles East kept applying pressure until it finally broke through in the fifth. That lone run proved to be all the Saints needed as the defense and circle work held firm the rest of the way.

Hannah Wulf delivered the standout performance of the day. She limited Fremd to just one hit and struck out eight, controlling the game from start to finish. Her command set the tone early, and she never allowed the Vikings to build sustained momentum. With every inning, the Fighting Saints looked more settled behind her, turning a tight postseason matchup into a showcase of composure.

St. Charles East began to threaten in the fourth inning, signaling that the breakthrough might be coming. The Saints kept the pressure on and finally pushed across the decisive run in the fifth, the game’s defining moment. In a sectional final where chances were scarce, that sequence was enough to swing the decision.

The win sends the Fighting Saints one step closer to the state finals and adds another memorable postseason chapter for the program. St. Charles East will face Marist on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at the Ballpark in Rosemont, with a trip to next weekend’s State Championship on the line.
