Fighting Saints Storm Back From 17-Point Hole to Stun Hononegah in State Quarterfinal

St. Charles East’s Fighting Saints roared back from a 20-3 deficit to defeat Hononegah 46-25 in the IHSA Team State Quarterfinal on Friday night at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington, advancing to the state semifinals.
Hononegah seized early control, building a 17-point advantage as the dual began at 150 pounds, featuring their 2 State Champs and 3 State Qualifiers. The Fighting Saints, however, steadied the match by grinding out decisions and turning the tide with bonus-point wins. Once the momentum shifted, St. Charles East methodically erased the gap and began to stack together victories that flipped a seemingly lopsided dual into a runaway result.
Key swings came as the Saints started converting matches into major decisions and pins, attacking for back points and capitalizing on position in the top and neutral phases. Each bonus-point result not only cut into Hononegah’s lead but also energized the Saints’ bench, turning a 20-3 deficit into a manageable margin and then into a commanding lead the Saints key wrestlers took the mat.
The decisive moment belonged to Liam Aye, who delivered one of the dual’s defining performances. Aye secured his 100th career victory in his bout and, in the process, clinched the team win for St. Charles East. His milestone decision locked up the dual mathematically for the Saints, capping the comeback and putting the quarterfinal out of Hononegah’s reach before the final whistle.
From there, the Saints closed out the remaining matches with confidence, adding to the final 46-25 margin. The late surge reflected the depth and balance that carried St. Charles East through the postseason, with multiple wrestlers contributing critical points at pivotal weights to keep the dual swinging in the Saints’ favor.
With the quarterfinal win, St. Charles East advances to face Marmion Academy in the state semifinals at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Saints are guaranteed to return to the mat at 6 p.m. to wrestle for a state trophy, either in the state championship dual or the third-place match, depending on the semifinal outcome. The comeback against Hononegah positions the Saints firmly in the hunt for hardware as the IHSA Team State Championships continue in Bloomington.
