Fighting Saints Volleyball sweep South Elgin to reach Sectional semifinal

St. Charles East opened postseason play with a strong performance Friday night, defeating South Elgin 25-16, 25-20 in the IHSA sectional quarterfinal at St. Charles East to move on to the semifinal round.

The Fighting Saints improved to 23-12 overall by controlling the match in straight sets and leaning on balanced production across the lineup. Zack Heilers turned in an all-around effort with 10 kills, 12 assists, six digs and an ace, helping power the offense while also contributing in the back row. Ethan Perkins added nine kills, one block, two digs and an ace, giving St. Charles East another steady attacking option throughout the night.

St. Charles East set the tone early with a clean first-set win, taking a 25-16 decision behind efficient attacking and solid serve pressure. In the second set, South Elgin pushed more consistently, but the Fighting Saints answered key moments with composure. Keegan Suessen made a major impact from the service line and in serve receive, finishing with 11 digs, three aces and an assist. His work helped St. Charles East stay organized during longer rallies and maintain control as the Red Storm tried to close the gap.

Josh Trentham chipped in four kills and two digs, adding to a team effort that featured timely offense and enough defensive stops to keep momentum on the home side. The Fighting Saints got contributions in the key phases of the match, from kills at the net to tough serving and steady floor defense, and that balance showed up as the match moved toward its finish.

With the win, St. Charles East advances to the sectional semifinal next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Wheaton Warrenville South. After a composed and confident quarterfinal showing on its home floor, the Fighting Saints will carry momentum into the next postseason test.
