Saints’ Football Playoff Run Ends With 21-14 Loss to Harlem
SAINT CHARLES, Ill. - St Charles East High School’s playoff run ended with a 21-14 loss to Harlem on Friday, Oct. 30, in Machesney Park after Harlem scored on its final drive to break a tie. The Saints finished a turnaround season that included more wins, a playoff berth and a postseason victory.
The Saints struck first, taking a 7-0 lead and putting Harlem in an early deficit. Harlem answered before halftime, sending the teams into the break tied 7-7. That left the Saints with another half to pursue a second playoff victory after advancing through their postseason opener.
St Charles East threatened several times, but two costly fumbles and two missed field goals prevented the Saints from turning those chances into additional points. Those missed opportunities proved consequential in a game ultimately decided by one touchdown. The Saints added seven points after halftime, while Harlem scored 14 in the second half.
Harlem’s final possession supplied the decisive touchdown, and the Saints could not produce an answering score before the game ended. The narrow finish closed their season in their second playoff game. Beyond the final result, St Charles East’s season included both qualifying for the playoffs and winning a postseason game, concrete steps forward in the program’s turnaround.
