St. Charles East earns first IHSA state dance trophy with 3rd-place finish in Class 2A

St. Charles East broke through for its first IHSA state dance trophy, finishing third in Class 2A at the IHSA Dance State Championship on Saturday at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington.
Competing in a deep 2A field, the Fighting Saints women’s dance team delivered back-to-back polished routines over the two-day championship to secure a spot on the podium. After coming up just short with two fourth-place finishes in the last three years, St. Charles East converted its latest state appearance into hardware, validating the program’s steady climb among the state’s elite.
Under first-year Head Coach Lindsey Haugen, the Saints’ state routine emphasized precision musicality and synchronized formations, highlighted by sharp transitions and clean level changes that drew strong reactions from the crowd. Judges rewarded the group’s timing and control, particularly in the mid-routine build where intricate footwork was layered over tight upper-body lines, showcasing both technical difficulty and consistency.
St. Charles East also impressed with its stunt elements and visual staging. Group lifts were executed with stable bases and confident flyers, and the team maintained performance quality through complex ripple effects and full-team direction changes. The choreography balanced athletic sections with expressive movement, allowing the dancers to sustain intensity from opening formation through the final pose on both competition days.
The Saints’ performance over the weekend underscored the program’s resilience following previous near-misses at state. After finishing fourth in two of the last three seasons, this year’s third-place result marked a tangible step forward and affirmed the group’s ability to deliver under championship pressure. The consistent execution across prelims and finals signaled that the team belonged in the top tier of Class 2A.
For Haugen and her staff, the trophy capped a notable debut campaign at the helm of the program. With a strong state showing now on its résumé and a core that has experienced both disappointment and breakthrough success at Grossinger Motors Arena, St. Charles East enters future seasons with elevated expectations and a clear standard for podium-level performances.
