St. Charles East girls capture DuKane indoor title in dramatic finish

BATAVIA, Ill. — St. Charles East claimed its first DuKane Conference indoor girls track and field championship since 2015, edging crosstown rival St. Charles North in a meet that was decided in the final event Friday at Batavia High School.
The Fighting Saints totaled 127.5 points to secure the conference crown, holding off the North Stars, who finished with 124 points. The tight margin kept the team race in doubt deep into the program, but St. Charles East produced enough depth and key finishes across events to reclaim the indoor title for the first time in more than a decade.
St. Charles East built its lead behind a blend of event winners and critical scoring performances in the sprints, distance races, and field events. Multiple athletes contributed top-three finishes, turning what could have been a two-team sprint for the trophy into a wire-to-wire team effort. With points at a premium throughout the afternoon, the Saints consistently found ways to place in scoring position and protect their advantage as the meet progressed.
The field events helped set the tone, as St. Charles East picked up early points that proved vital by the end of the meet. Strong efforts in the jumps and throws allowed the Saints to keep pace with challengers and avoid falling behind in the standings. That foundation gave the track athletes a platform to attack the middle and late portions of the schedule with the conference title in reach.
On the track, the Saints’ individual standouts converted in key moments. Sprinters and middle-distance runners delivered high finishes that kept pressure on St. Charles North and narrowed opportunities for the North Stars to close the gap. Personal records in multiple events added to the scoring total, as athletes capitalized on the fast indoor surface and championship setting to post their best marks of the season when the team needed them most.
Relays played a decisive role in clinching the championship. St. Charles East’s relay squads combined strong exchanges with balanced lineups, finishing high enough in the standings to preserve the narrow lead in the team race. By the time the final relay took the track, the margin between the Saints and North Stars had tightened, but St. Charles East held on, securing just enough points in the closing event to lock up the 127.5–124 victory and the DuKane indoor championship.
The title marks a significant milestone for the program, ending an indoor championship drought that dated back to 2015 and underscoring the depth and development across the roster. With the indoor season now capped by a conference trophy, the Fighting Saints head into the outdoor campaign with momentum, confidence, and a proven formula for success in championship settings.
