St. Charles East broke open a competitive match in the second half Wednesday night, turning a one-goal halftime edge into a 6-2 victory over Wheaton North. The Fighting Saints led 3-2 at the break, then added three unanswered goals after halftime to stay unbeaten and continue a strong spring run.

The Saints struck first when Sophia Wollenberg finished a chance off a Mya Leon assist at 28:50 of the first half. Wheaton North answered at 26:49, but St. Charles East quickly regained control on a goal from Leon, set up by Wollenberg, at 24:14. After the Falcons drew level again at 17:11, the Saints found the decisive response before halftime. Tatum Smith scored at 13:27 on another assist from Wollenberg, sending St. Charles East into the half with a 3-2 lead.

That advantage grew quickly after the restart. Wollenberg added her second goal of the night at 36:37 of the second half, this time off a feed from Qori Strotkamp, to give the Saints breathing room. Leon followed with her second goal at 33:10, with Reese Kyle earning the assist, and St. Charles East had full command. Anika Dodrill capped the scoring at 2:36, again created by Kyle, as the Saints finished with six goals from four different scorers.

Wollenberg and Leon drove the attack all evening. Wollenberg totaled two goals and two assists, directly factoring into four scores, while Leon matched her with two goals and an assist. Kyle delivered two second-half assists, and Smith and Dodrill each added a goal. The ball movement and finishing reflected the depth that has helped make the Fighting Saints one of the area’s most dangerous teams.

In goal, Mia Olenek played all 80 minutes, made one save and allowed two goals. Once the Saints settled in after Wheaton North’s early responses, the defense tightened and did not allow another goal in the second half. The win moved St. Charles East to 11-0-4 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, another upbeat step for a team that continues to pair attacking flair with steady defending.
