St. Paul Kicks Off Season With Annual Alumni Volleyball Match

The St. Paul girls varsity volleyball team will open its season with a familiar test when it hosts former players in the program’s annual alumni match at 7:00pm Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026. The event gives the current team an early opportunity to measure its progress while continuing a tradition that connects today’s players with those who previously represented St. Paul.

St. Paul has spent the past several weeks practicing for the matchup and preparing to show how its play has developed. The varsity team’s organization and communication will be tested against alumni who bring experience and familiarity with the program. That combination has regularly produced a competitive match and makes the event a useful opening challenge before the regular schedule begins.

Setters Annie Cavazos, No. 14, and Lila Wolf, No. 5, will be central to St. Paul’s attack. The two have been working on new sets and plays designed to put the team’s hitters in favorable positions. Their ability to vary the offense, deliver consistent sets and maintain tempo will be an important tactical storyline as St. Paul looks to keep the alumni defense from settling into predictable rotations.

The match also offers St. Paul a chance to evaluate its execution in a competitive setting, from serve receive and transition play to defensive positioning. Clean first contacts would allow Cavazos and Lila Wolf to use more of the new offense, while steady communication could help the varsity team handle the alumni’s experience. After the annual matchup, St. Paul will turn its attention to home league openers with Sheridan & Western Christian on Monday, Aug. 31, 2026 at 4:00 and 7:00.
