High-Energy Silver Streaks Target Conference Crown, Playoff Return in 2026

Steinmetz College Prep enters the new softball season with a clear identity and a bold agenda. The Silver Streaks see themselves as a high-energy, fiercely competitive group intent on dominating the Chicago Public White West conference and ending an eight-year playoff drought. Under head coach Rolando “RoRo” Rodriguez, Steinmetz is building around speed, experience and improved pitching with the stated goal of “making some noise” in the postseason while maintaining a standard of being both softball players and academic athletes.

The program’s foundation starts in the circle with senior pitcher Victoria Vasquez, who returns as the staff ace after leading the conference in strikeouts last season with 81 and ranking 14th in the city among pitchers. Vasquez logged more than 80 innings a year ago and posted a 6-2 record, giving the Silver Streaks a proven workhorse they can rely on every league game. Her experience and ability to miss bats will be central to Steinmetz’s plans to turn last season’s 7-14 overall record and 5-9 conference mark into a winning campaign.

Behind her, Steinmetz boasts a veteran core that powered the offense a season ago. Senior catcher/second baseman Litzy Marin returns after hitting .421 and swiping 20 bases, providing stability behind the plate and at the top of the order. Four-year varsity player Dinasti Bell brings another dangerous bat with a .419 average, 33 hits, 24 stolen bases, 23 RBIs and 33 runs scored last year, giving the Silver Streaks an established run producer in the heart of the lineup. Senior infielder Deja Kirk adds more speed and versatility after scoring 32 runs and stealing 30 bases while posting a .289 average and a team-best .609 on-base percentage.

The most notable newcomer is freshman infielder Abigail Rodriguez, who arrives with extensive travel and Cubs RBI experience unusual for a first-year player in the program. Slotted to start at shortstop from Day 1, Rodriguez has played since age 6 at Bell Park and has logged time as a catcher and third baseman. Coaches describe her as powerful and vocal on and off the field, and her advanced skill set is expected to bolster the infield defense while adding another impact bat to a lineup that already produced 136 RBIs and 256 runs last season.

Collectively, Steinmetz believes its greatest strengths lie in its energy, speed and growing continuity under Rodriguez, now in his second year leading the varsity group. The Silver Streaks piled up 194 stolen bases last season and plan to continue pressuring opponents on the basepaths while tightening up on defense after a year of hard lessons in the field. Program-wide, the emphasis is on consistent development, building depth through a steady pipeline and sustaining a culture that values both on-field performance and classroom success.

That confidence will be tested early and often in conference play, where Steinmetz has circled matchups against Orr, Prosser, Westinghouse, Disney, Schurz, Ogden and North Grand as measuring sticks for its goal of league dominance. With Vazquez leading the pitching staff, a senior-heavy core in Marin, Bell and Kirk, and a high-upside freshman in Rodriguez, the Silver Streaks believe they have the pieces to contend at the top of the White West. If the group’s development matches its ambitions, Steinmetz could not only rise in the conference standings but also finally return to the city playoff stage.
