ROUND ROCK, Texas — St. Agnes Academy rode a late first-half breakthrough and two second-half strikes to a 3-0 victory in the TAPPS Division I girls soccer semifinal Tuesday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex, advancing the Tigers to the state championship match.

Battling into a fierce wind for most of the opening 40 minutes, St. Agnes spent much of the first half grinding out possessions and looking for a clean chance on goal. With a little more than one minute remaining before halftime, the Tigers finally broke through, capitalizing on one of their last attacks into the wind to take a 1-0 lead into the break and seize control of the match’s momentum.

The opening goal came from Madison Taylor, who found space and finished just before the interval to put St. Agnes in front. Her strike not only gave the Tigers the lead but also shifted the tactical outlook, allowing them to turn around and play the second half with the wind at their backs, pressing higher and pinning the opposition in its own half for extended stretches.

The early game saw the wind play a large factor in the contest. Both teams navigated the challenge well before St Agnes Academy secured the victory over district rival St Pius X.

With conditions now in their favor, the Tigers’ attack widened the field and continued to generate chances after halftime. Brooklyn Worsdel doubled the advantage early in the second half, finishing off a build-up that took advantage of the wind-aided service into the attacking third. Later in the half, Natalie Romero Ross added the third goal, giving St. Agnes a commanding 3-0 cushion and effectively putting the semifinal out of reach.

While the forwards provided the goals, St. Agnes also relied on a disciplined defensive effort to preserve the clean sheet. The back line limited quality looks at goal despite the dangerous first-half wind, closing down space quickly and clearing service into the box. After halftime, with the wind no longer an issue for the Tigers’ defense, they were able to control tempo, connect passes out of the back and see out the shutout.

St. Agnes’ 1-0 edge at halftime and two-goal surge in the second half sealed the 3-0 result and punched the Tigers’ ticket to the TAPPS Division I girls soccer championship, where they will look to carry forward both their balanced scoring and their defensive organization in pursuit of a state title.
