St. Thomas, Village School Set for High-Stakes TAPPS Division I South Semifinal Rematch

ROUND ROCK, Texas — A familiar district rivalry will take on added weight Thursday night when St. Thomas High School meets The Village School in the TAPPS Division I boys soccer South semifinal at Kenney Fort. With a berth in the Division I championship match on the line, the latest chapter between the Eagles and Vikings is set to decide which District 3 power advances to the state’s biggest stage.
The matchup doubles as a rematch, adding another layer of intrigue to a contest that already carries significant stakes. St. Thomas can secure a spot in the Division I title game with a win, while The Village School looks to flip the script after falling behind early in the previous meeting. Both teams come into Round Rock having navigated the playoff bracket to reach this point, and Thursday’s semifinal is expected to test their depth, composure and execution in a knockout setting.
St. Thomas’ attack will be central to the storyline after the Eagles found success early in the first half of their last meeting with the Vikings. Forward Alex Dray opened the scoring at the 26:07 mark, and teammate Eugenio Labarthe doubled the advantage less than five minutes later at 21:44. An own goal credited to St. Thomas at 6:27 compounded the Vikings’ problems and underscored the pressure the Eagles can generate in the attacking third. Replicating that kind of early surge could be crucial if St. Thomas aims to seize control again and force The Village School to chase the game.
The Village School, however, has shown it can respond. Sebastian Svendsen found the net at 37:59 in the second half of that contest, giving the Vikings a foothold and a reminder that they can break through against the Eagles’ back line. Svendsen’s influence in the attacking phase, whether as a finisher or a focal point drawing defenders, will likely be key if The Village School is to generate sustained pressure and avoid another early deficit.
Tactically, the semifinal may hinge on which side dictates tempo and manages pivotal moments around halftime. St. Thomas’ ability to press and create chances led directly to three first-half goals in the previous meeting, including the decisive own goal, while The Village School’s response after the break suggested adjustments that could carry into this rematch. With a place in the TAPPS Division I championship at stake, both teams are expected to refine their game plans around those earlier lessons as they meet again under brighter lights in Round Rock.
