Friday Night Lights Unity Seats Brings Community Together for 9/11 Remembrance

Alicia Gessler | Union County Sheriff's Office | Sep 9, 2026

Elk Point-Jefferson will host Dakota Valley for its Homecoming Game Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. CDT in Elk Point, South Dakota. The Friday Night Lights Unity Seats experience will make the evening about more than football, bringing neighbors together to honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11, remember those who were lost and recognize the heroes who served.

Sheriff Prouty, surrounding-area law enforcement officers and deputies, active-duty military members and veterans will join first responders, families and other community members for the remembrance. Their presence will honor the service, sacrifice and dedication of those who protect communities and the country while demonstrating the strength that grows when neighbors stand together.

Through the US United Unity Seats program, the Union County Sheriff's Office and community members who may hold opposing viewpoints share seats and experience the game together. Tickets are purchased for the participants, allowing sports and the energy of Homecoming night to provide common ground for conversation. Sitting side by side is intended to help people connect as neighbors rather than approach one another as adversaries.

The evening will begin with a special opening coin toss featuring guests invited by Sheriff Prouty from throughout Union County. Special public-address announcements and moments of silence during the game will give fans opportunities to pause, reflect and honor the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Those moments will complement the excitement on the field with a shared spirit of gratitude and remembrance.

Strong communities like Union County stand together, especially when remembering the service of deputies, law enforcement officers, military members, veterans and first responders. The Union County Sheriff's Office is grateful for US United support and for the local residents helping make this night possible. Under the Friday night lights, Elk Point-Jefferson and Dakota Valley will provide the backdrop for a larger display of unity, respect and community connection.
