Huskies Celebrate Homecoming Victory While Unity Seats Builds Community Connections

The Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies gave the home crowd plenty to celebrate Sept. 11, defeating the Dakota Valley Panthers 42-7 in Elk Point. Fans from both Union County schools filled the Homecoming matchup with energy, creating a spirited setting that showcased local football tradition and pride across the community.

Elk Point-Jefferson controlled the game from the start, using a standout defensive performance to set the tone and build a 35-point advantage. The victory lifted The Huskies to 3-0 before weather brought the contest to an early conclusion with 3:56 remaining. Even with the shortened finish, the commanding win added another memorable chapter to the Homecoming celebration.

The evening carried significance beyond the scoreboard. Before kickoff, the community honored local public safety and military members with a special 9/11 anniversary tribute. Sheriff Prouty conducted the coin toss and joined Unity Seats participants that included Union County sheriff’s deputies, first responders, and law enforcement officers from North Sioux City, Jefferson and Elk Point. Their participation recognized the service and dedication of local heroes while reinforcing the sheriff’s office’s connection with the people it serves.

Through the US United Unity Seats program, law enforcement leaders and community members who may hold opposing viewpoints shared the game-day experience as neighbors rather than adversaries. Conversations throughout the evening, along with interactions with fans, helped build connections across agencies and communities. Seated amid the same cheers and Homecoming excitement, participants found common ground in their support for local students, public service and Union County.

Participants were honored to take part in an evening that combined a major community event with an important moment of remembrance. Gathering for a competitive football game while recognizing the significance of 9/11 strengthened the bond among local communities, service members, first responders and those they serve. The experience showed how sports can create space for respect across differences, bringing people together around a shared field, a shared tribute and a shared sense of community.
