Independence High School’s boys and girls track and field teams opened the outdoor season with matching runner-up finishes Friday at the Siegel Invitational at Siegel High in Murfreesboro, placing second overall in large fields that featured roughly 30 programs.

In a meet that stretched late into the night and did not wrap up until around 1:30 a.m., the Eagles delivered a series of standout performances across the track and in the field. Coaches described it as a solid first meet highlighted by meaningful individual progress and particularly strong results from Independence’s field-event group.

Leading the way on the girls side, Emma Rees captured the long jump title with a mark of 17 feet, 1.5 inches, setting the tone for Independence’s success in the jumps. In the high jump, Kaylee Olsen added another victory, clearing 5-2 to secure first place and give the Eagles two gold medals in the field. Both performances anchored a field-event unit that was a strength throughout the day.

Independence’s sprinters and middle-distance runners also produced key podium finishes. Jillian Roth twice earned third-place medals, running 1:00.15 in the 400-meter dash and 27.11 in the 200 meters to score valuable points. Distance runner Emmie Underwood turned in a strong early-season effort in the 3,200 meters, placing third in 11:17.95, while Channing Ruiz matched that result in the boys 800, taking third in 2:04.36.

In the horizontal jumps, the Eagles continued to pile up scoring marks. Izzy Eschete claimed third place in the triple jump with a leap of 32-5, adding to the field-event haul that helped both Independence squads stay near the top of the team standings. Across the board, athletes showed signs of progression that coaches noted as an important step in the early part of the schedule.

With both the boys and girls teams finishing second overall out of 30 teams, Independence left the Siegel Invitational with momentum and a clearer picture of its depth. The results provide a strong foundation as the Eagles move deeper into the season and prepare for upcoming invitationals and championship meets, aiming to build on the early success shown in Murfreesboro.
