Independence girls take third, boys place 11th at Nike Rocket City Showcase

Independence turned in a strong weekend at the Page Invitational and the Nike Rocket City Showcase in Huntsville, Alabama, with the Eagles girls finishing third in a field of more than 35 teams and the boys placing 11th against another deep field. The two-day Rocket City Showcase brought together some of the region's top competition, and Independence responded with a mix of event titles, school records and personal bests.
The girls set the tone with a series of headline performances. Junior Jillian Roth won the girls 800 meters championship in 2:18.54, a personal record, and also helped power the winning 4x800 relay. That relay team of Roth, Jacobi Ruiz, Lloyd and Emmie Underwood finished in 9:45.65, with Roth delivering a 2:17 split. Independence also took runner-up in the 4x400 relay at 4:06.61 behind the group of Emma Rees, Gencye Knight, Lloyd and Roth.
Knight was one of the meet's busiest and most productive athletes. She set a school record in the 100 with a 12.07 in prelims, then ran 12.16 in the final. She added a personal-record 25.17 in the 200 to place seventh overall and cleared 18 feet, 4 inches in the long jump to finish second. Rees also scored in the long jump, placing seventh at 16-9.5, while Talia Nelson set a school record and personal best in the pole vault by clearing 9-0.
Independence's distance group added more points and more top-eight finishes. Freshman Emmie Underwood ran 5:12.96 for third in the mile which is a personal record and ran 11:26.54 for fifth in the 3200. Ruiz, a Harding commit, posted a personal-record 5:20.82 in the mile to place eighth overall. Those efforts helped underline the depth that carried the girls to a top-three team finish.
On the boys side, Asher Oates, an NC State commit, led the way in the 800 with a 1:58.60 placing third in the boys 800m championship heat. Senior Dillon Overton followed with a 2:03.02 to place third in the open 800, and sophomore Channing Ruiz added a 2:05.65 for seventh. Jeremiah Wambaugh contributed in two distance events, taking eighth in the 3200 at 10:11.25 and placing third overall in the 2000-meter steeplechase with a 6:41.88.
The boys relays also delivered solid finishes, with the 4x800 clocking 8:18.44 for fifth overall and the 4x400 finishing seventh in 3:29.60. Taken together, the weekend matched the tone set by the coaching staff's post-meet assessment: Independence's athletes showed up, stepped up and delivered against one of the toughest meets on the schedule.
