Eagles end volleyball regular season with loss to No. 1-ranked Magnificat
Avon’s girls volleyball team ended the regular season Wednesday by hosting Magnificat in a non-conference matchup. The Blue Streaks are the top-ranked Division II team in the state, and they came away with a sweep, 25-12, 25-18, 25-19, to drop the Eagles to 13-9.
Peyton Reinart topped Avon with eight kills, while Clare Freaney had six. However, the Eagles had 23 hitting errors to just 20 kills, which is not a recipe for success. Freshmen Lucy Lee and Aria Barbera played well on defense, with Lee compiling four blocks and Barbera three. Lee also had three kills and an ace. Ally Brediger led Avon with 13 digs, and Madison Demmerle had 11 assists and an ace.
Last year, the Eagles lost to Magnificat in four sets in the season finale but then came back and swept the Blue Streaks in a state semifinal. Avon, which is seeded sixth in the district, begins this year’s postseason journey on October 26 when it hosts No. 24 Akron Firestone at 5 p.m.
