Eagles Open Season With 12–4 Road Win at Canfield

Avon High School’s Eagles women’s lacrosse team opened its season in convincing fashion Saturday, rolling to a 12–4 road victory over Canfield in mainly clear, cool conditions in Canfield, Ohio.
Six different Eagles found the back of the net as Avon built a multi-goal lead early and never allowed Canfield to mount a serious comeback. The balanced scoring effort kept the Canfield defense off balance, with multiple midfielders and attackers contributing to sustained pressure in the offensive end. Avon's ability to share the ball with 5 assists set the tone for the afternoon and gave the Eagles control from the opening draw.
Avon consistently turned draw controls and ground balls into quick, connected possessions, moving the ball through X and the wings to generate high-percentage looks. The offense capitalized on those chances to steadily extend the lead, preventing Canfield from gaining momentum or stringing together long possessions.
Faceoff play was a key factor in the outcome, as the Eagles repeatedly gained possession off the draw to start offensive sequences. Winning the battle at the circle allowed Avon to dictate tempo, limit Canfield’s touches and keep the ball in the attacking half for extended stretches. That territorial advantage helped produce the six-goal cushion by the final horn.
On the defensive end, the Eagles were solid throughout the game, holding Canfield to just four goals. Avon’s back line communicated well on slides, closed down dodging lanes and forced the hosts into contested shots. When Canfield did break through, the Eagles’ goalkeeper came up with key saves to preserve the lead and prevent any sustained rally.
The season-opening win continues the program’s recent trend of strong early performances and gives Avon momentum heading into its next test. The Eagles will look to carry their balanced scoring, effective draw work and disciplined defense into their upcoming matchup at Strongsville on Tuesday, March 24, at 7 p.m.
