Eagles start slowly, but come back for volleyball victory over Avon Lake
Host Avon came out flat and dropped the first set on Tuesday, but the Eagles turned things around and swept the next three sets to defeat rival Avon Lake for the second time this season, 13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16. The victory was the 150th for head coach Kara Stergiou.
Avon, 11-6 overall and 9-4 in Southwestern Conference play, was led by Clare Freaney with 21 kills. She was backed by Peyton Reinart with nine kills and two blocks and Lucy Lee with eight kills and two aces. Libero Ally Brediger topped Avon with 34 serve receptions and 18 digs and also added five assists and two aces. Madison Demmerle had 19 assists for the Eagles and Lauren Bauer had 17.
A graduate of Rocky River, Stergiou started her head coaching career at Vermilion before coming to Avon in 2023. In her first three seasons she led the Eagles to a record of 76-6, including a Division II state championship in 2025 and a final four appearance in 2024. Her overall record at Avon is 87-12 in less than four seasons.
The Eagles will play their final SWC match of the season at Elyria on Thursday.
