Kobak, Molenaar and Lundgaard lead Avon swimmers at Oak Harbor

The Avon swim team hit the road Saturday to compete in the Mizuno Invitational, hosted by Oak Harbor High School. Avon’s girls nearly pulled out a team victory, finishing second among 11 teams, one point behind Ontario. The boys ended up fifth in a field of 10 teams.

In the girls field, the Eagles won three events and posted two runner-up finishes in scoring 245 points to 246 for Ontario. Avon’s boys scored 145 points to finish behind Toledo St. Francis (269), Ontario (264), Bryan (190½) and Oak Harbor (151).

Leading the way for the Avon girls were Sierra Kobak and Emma Molenaar. The pair combined with Leah Slivochka and Clare Blayney to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.12), take second in the 200 free relay (1:42.81) and take fourth in the 400 free relay (4:03.25). Kobak also won the 200 individual medley (2:13.20) and took second in the 100 breast (1:06.87), while Molenaar added a title in the 100 back (1:00.09) and was third in the 100 free (54.96).

The star of the day for Avon’s boys was Luke Lundgaard, who placed second behind Cole Peters in both the 50 free and the 100 free and set school records in each event. The sophomore posted a time of 21.89 in the 50, breaking the record of 21.91 that he had tied earlier in the week. His time in the 100 free was 48.01.

Lundgaard also swam with Elliott Brooks, Gavin Bello and Sean Flanigan on the 200 medley relay (1:41.37) that placed fourth and on the fourth-place 400 free relay (3:29.01) with Bello, Ian Cibulskas and Kris Childers. In addition, Flanigan, Childers, Brooks and Cibulskas combined to take third in the 200 free relay (1:35.48) and Bello was third in the 200 free (1:50.96).
