Bay High School Rockets Falter in Season Opener Against Avon Lake
AVON LAKE, OH, April 3, 2025 - Bay High School's varsity baseball team, the Rockets, faced a tough loss in their season opener on Thursday, falling 8-1 to the Avon Lake Shoremen at Avon Lake High School. The game marked the beginning of the regular baseball season under partly cloudy skies with a gentle western breeze.
The only run for the Rockets came from Jack McManamon, despite a challenging outing from starting pitcher Johnny Veverka, who pitched four innings, surrendering seven hits and four walks while striking out one batter. The Rockets' defense was a bright spot, with outfielders Charlie Rodgers and Travis Ropelewski each executing critical outfield assists to catch Shoremen runners at home, showcasing strategic plays that prevented additional scores. Additionally, the infield showed resilience, with senior shortstop Caleb Rinehart and junior Trevor Prudhoe maintaining an error-free performance in defense.
Offensively, Trevor Ormsby stood out for the Rockets, hitting two, including a double, which was one of the key highlights for Bay High School. Despite these efforts, the Shoremen’s aggressive play and strong batting lineup led to their victory.
Looking forward, the Rockets will attempt to regroup and claim their first win of the season in their next encounter against the Gilmour Academy Lancers at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, OH, on April 4, 2025. The team’s current record stands at 0-1, setting the stage for a crucial early-season matchup where they hope to turn their fortunes around.
