Bay Softball drops 9-7 extra-inning game to Normandy
Bay’s Softball team let a late lead slip away Tuesday night, falling 9-7 to Normandy in eight innings after Claire Karlak’s two-run triple broke a 7-7 tie in the top of the eighth.
The Rockets were in position for a home win at 29230 Wolf Rd in Bay Village after building a 6-3 advantage through five innings, but Normandy rallied with a four-run sixth and then delivered the decisive extra-inning hit. Bay answered once in the bottom of the sixth when Caitie Petersen doubled down the right-field line to tie the game at 7, yet the Rockets could not push across another run after Karlak’s go-ahead drive.
Bay opened the scoring in the first inning when Aleiyha Aponte singled home a run. Normandy moved in front in the second on Aubrey Kuhn’s home run to left and Kendall Straight’s RBI double, but the Rockets answered quickly in the bottom half. Julia Mavis lined a single that brought home two runs, and Lizzie McFarland added an RBI groundout as Bay seized a 4-2 lead.
The Rockets added to that margin in the fifth. Aponte connected on a solo home run to left field, and Ava Bottone followed with an RBI single to extend Bay’s lead to 6-3. Normandy turned the game again in the sixth, taking a 7-6 edge on Gianna Lynch’s two-run single, Ava Ramirez’s sacrifice fly and Kuhn’s RBI single. Bay answered immediately in the bottom of the inning on Petersen’s run-scoring double, setting up the extra-inning finish.
Aponte and Petersen led Bay with two hits apiece, while Aponte and Mavis each drove in two runs. Bay also turned one double play on defense. In the circle, Aponte started and worked six innings, allowing 11 hits and seven runs while striking out seven and walking two. Lucy Corbett took the loss after pitching the final two innings. For Normandy, Ramirez earned the win after going all eight innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs, six earned, with 12 strikeouts and four walks.
Normandy finished with 15 hits, with Kuhn going 3-for-5 and joining Karlak and Lynch with two RBIs apiece. Maddie Kirk, Lizzie Skidmore, Ramirez and Straight also had multiple hits for the Invaders. Bay, now coming off a narrow defeat in a game that featured several lead changes, is scheduled to face Magnificat on Wednesday.
