LAKEWOOD, Ohio - Bay’s varsity softball team stayed within striking distance for much of Monday’s game before Lakewood pulled away with a five-run sixth inning to hand the Rockets an 11-1 loss at Lakewood High School.

The decisive stretch came in the bottom of the sixth, when the Rangers turned a competitive game into a lopsided final. Ella Bower delivered the biggest blow of the inning with a three-run home run to left field, and Delaney Starr later drew a bases-loaded walk as Lakewood added five runs on two hits. Bower had already put the Rangers on the board earlier with a double in the third, and she finished in the middle of nearly every key moment, going 3-for-4 with seven RBIs.

Bay’s lone run came on a strong swing from Aleiyha Aponte, who hit a solo home run to center in the top of the sixth. Aponte also led the Rockets at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with the team’s only RBI. Bay managed four hits against Bower, who worked six innings for Lakewood and struck out 16 while allowing one run and one walk.

Lucy Corbett drew the start in the circle for Bay and kept the Rockets in the game through five innings. Corbett allowed six runs on seven hits, struck out five and walked four over five innings. Behind her, Bay played a clean defensive game and did not commit an error. Caitie Petersen led the defensive effort with seven plays as the Rockets were steady in the field despite consistent pressure from Lakewood’s lineup and running game.

Lakewood created additional problems on the bases, finishing with five stolen bases, including two from Emily Gillick. Starr drew three walks, and the Rangers showed patience throughout the afternoon, collecting eight walks as a team. Lakewood also played error-free defense, with Gillick recording a team-high 16 chances in the field.

Monday’s game was played under clear skies in 40-degree weather at Lakewood High School. Bay now turns its attention to Tuesday’s matchup against Valley Forge.
