Bay Softball erupts for 10-run second inning in 18-3 win over North Olmsted
Bay Softball broke the game open with a 10-run second inning and rolled past North Olmsted 18-3 on Monday at North Olmsted High School, overcoming an early deficit behind a relentless lineup and steady work in the circle from Lucy Corbett.
North Olmsted struck first in the opening inning when Delaney Steimle homered to left field for a two-run shot, giving the Eagles a quick lead. Bay answered with its biggest inning of the day in the second. Ella Taulbee singled home a run, Corbett drove in another on a groundout, and the Rockets kept pressure on with aggressive baserunning and patient at-bats. An error, a wild pitch and a passed ball all produced runs, Lizzie McFarland doubled in another, Maeve McFarland drew a bases-loaded walk, and Corbett later added a two-run single as Bay sent 10 runs across to seize full control.
The Rockets added on again in the third, scoring five more runs on five hits. Julia Mavis doubled home a run, Lizzie McFarland followed with an RBI single, Caitie Petersen drove in two with a double, and Corbett capped the inning with another run-scoring groundout. By then, Bay had turned a tight game into a runaway, stacking quality plate appearances throughout the middle innings.
Mavis was one of the toughest outs in the lineup, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. Aleiyha Aponte led Bay with four hits in five at-bats, while Taulbee collected three hits in four trips. The Rockets finished with 15 hits and also drew six walks, a combination that kept constant traffic on the bases and forced North Olmsted to play from behind for most of the afternoon.
Corbett earned the win for Bay, allowing four hits and three runs over five innings. She struck out one and walked three. Audrey Schneid took the loss for North Olmsted after giving up 10 runs, two earned, on five hits over two innings, with two strikeouts and two walks. For the Eagles, Steimle drove in two runs and went 1-for-3, while leadoff hitter Jocelyn Suckart finished with two hits in three at-bats.
The Rockets next welcome Normandy on Tuesday.
