Bay Softball falls to Olmsted Falls, 9-5, after early Bulldogs surge

Olmsted Falls Softball broke the game open in the first two innings and Bay could not fully recover Thursday, as the Rockets dropped a 9-5 decision to the Bulldogs at Olmsted Falls High School.

Bay struck first in the top of the first when Caitie Petersen singled home a run, giving the Rockets an early 1-0 lead. The advantage was brief. Olmsted Falls answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking control on Ashley Scott’s two-run triple, a bases-loaded walk by Madilynn Sarasua, and an RBI single from Raegan Desmone.

The Bulldogs kept adding on in the second and third. Scott drove in another run on a groundout in the second, and a single by No. 27 also brought home a run for a 6-1 lead. In the third, Olmsted Falls scored twice more, once after a Bay error and again on a groundout by Brooke Largent, stretching the margin to 8-1.

Petersen provided much of Bay’s offense from the middle of the lineup. The infielder went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, accounting for more than half of the Rockets’ scoring. Bay finished with four hits against Scott, who earned the win for Olmsted Falls after allowing five runs, two earned, over 5 1/3 innings. She struck out 11 and walked four.

Lucy Corbett took the loss for Bay, working five innings. She allowed nine runs, three earned, on five hits while striking out four and walking seven. Olmsted Falls showed patience throughout the game, drawing seven walks and putting pressure on the bases. Sarasua stole two bases, and the Bulldogs finished with four steals. Hailey Klamut, Desmone, Largent, Scott and No. 27 each had one hit for Olmsted Falls, while Scott led the Bulldogs with three RBIs.

Despite the loss, Bay showed some fight after the early innings, trimming the deficit but never getting close enough to erase the damage from Olmsted Falls’ first-inning outburst and steady run production. The Rockets are scheduled to return home Saturday to face Lorain.
