Bay Softball rolls past North Olmsted 18-7
Bay broke the game open with a seven-run second inning and never gave back the lead Friday, defeating North Olmsted 18-7 in a varsity softball matchup at Bay High School.
Maeve McFarland led the Rockets' offense with a six-RBI day, finishing with three hits. She delivered the decisive blows in multiple spots, doubling in the second inning to bring home three runs, singling in the fifth to drive in another, and doubling again in the sixth to score two more. Bay finished with 15 hits and consistently pressured North Olmsted with traffic on the bases.
North Olmsted scored first in the top of the first when Delaney Steimle lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. Bay answered immediately in the bottom half. Lizzie McFarland grounded out to score a run, and Ava Bottone followed with another run-scoring groundout as the Rockets moved in front 2-1.
The biggest surge came an inning later. Bay sent seven runs across in the second on four hits, turning a one-run edge into a commanding lead. Julia Mavis singled home a run, Ella Taulbee added an RBI single, Caitie Petersen drew a bases-loaded walk, Maeve McFarland cleared the bases with a double, and Bottone picked up another RBI on a groundout. The Rockets' patient approach also showed up in the box score, as Bay drew eight walks, with Taulbee and McFarland taking two apiece.
North Olmsted made its strongest push in the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits. Julianna Demian drove in one with a single, Ava Jamison added a two-run single, and Layla Salameh doubled home two more. Bay still had the answers. Julia Mavis, batting leadoff, set the tone all afternoon by going 4-for-5, while Lucy Corbett and Olivia Stehlik each added multiple hits to keep the lineup moving.
Corbett earned the win in the circle, allowing seven runs on nine hits over six innings. She struck out four and walked five. Defensively, Bay turned a double play in a clean highlight behind its pitcher. North Olmsted also turned one double play and stayed aggressive on the bases, stealing six times, with Ashleigh Myer, Salameh and Jocelyn Suckart each recording multiple steals. Myer went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagles in hits.
The Rockets improved their day with a complete offensive showing, combining extra-base hits, situational outs and plate discipline to put the game away. Next up for Bay is a road game at Westlake on Tuesday.
