Bay Softball’s Late Rally Falls Short in 9-7 Loss to Madison

Bay Varsity Softball out-hit Madison 9-5 but could not overcome a pair of big innings, falling 9-7 in a nonconference softball matchup Tuesday at Bay High School.

The decisive stretch came in the fifth and sixth innings, when Madison turned a Rockets lead into a commanding advantage. Trailing after Bay jumped ahead early, the Bluestreaks moved in front in the top of the fifth as Paige Higgins singled in a run, Ally Negin (Susquehanna Univ.) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in another, and a Bay error brought two more across. Madison then added five runs on three hits in the sixth, capitalizing again on a defensive miscue, an inside-the-park home run by Higgins that plated two, an RBI single from Negin and another RBI single from Hannah Welch to push the margin to 9-3.

Bay’s offense gave the Rockets an early cushion. In the bottom of the first inning, Maeve McFarland doubled to drive in two runs and put Bay on the board. The Rockets continued to apply pressure throughout the game, finishing with nine hits and five walks. McFarland led the way at the top of the order with two walks, helping set the table for the middle of the lineup in multiple trips.

After falling behind by six in the sixth inning, the Rockets mounted a late rally that brought the tying run to the plate. In the bottom half of the sixth, Ella Taulbee delivered a two-run single to cut into the deficit, and Aleiyha Aponte followed with a home run to right field, a two-run shot that narrowed the gap to 9-7 and energized the Bay dugout. The four-run frame capped a strong day at the plate for both hitters, as Taulbee finished 2-for-2 with a team-high three RBIs and Aponte also recorded two hits while providing the Rockets’ only long ball.

Bay’s lineup was productive throughout, with Taulbee, Aponte and Julia Mavis all collecting two hits. The Rockets showed patience as well, working five walks as a team. Despite the offensive output and a pair of multi-run innings, Madison’s error-free defense and timely pitching prevented Bay from fully erasing the deficit.

In the circle, Aponte went the distance for the Rockets, shouldering all seven innings. The right-hander allowed nine runs, only two of them earned, on five hits, striking out nine and walking nine. Defensive miscues proved costly, extending several Madison innings and helping fuel the Bluestreaks’ two big scoring frames. On the Madison side, Camille Horvath earned the win, working five innings and limiting Bay to three runs on five hits while striking out five and walking three before the Rockets’ late surge against the Bluestreaks’ staff.

Higgins led Madison with three RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance that included the inside-the-park home run, while Natalie Best drew three walks as part of a patient Bluestreaks lineup that totaled nine free passes. Madison was aggressive on the bases as well, with Lauren Martin and Higgins each stealing multiple bases and the Bluestreaks swiping six bags overall. In the field, Madison was flawless, committing no errors as Negin handled a team-high 11 chances.

Bay, which showed resilience in nearly erasing a six-run deficit and out-hitting Madison, will look to build on the offensive momentum when the Rockets travel to face Avon Lake’s Shoregals on Wednesday.
