Buckeye girls place fourth at Division III district, send 11 to regionals

Buckeye’s girls turned in a strong all-around performance at the Division III OHSAA District meet in Bay Village, finishing fourth out of 13 teams with 86 points and advancing 11 athletes to next week’s regional meet. The Bucks were powered by event wins, runner-up finishes and steady scoring across the track and field lineup during the two-day meet held Thursday and Saturday.
The biggest highlight came in the women’s pole vault, where Ellen Steppenbacker cleared 10 feet to win the district title. Leah Bengough added more big points in the same event by taking third at 9 feet, giving Buckeye a major lift in the field events. Maddie Gillin also delivered a runner-up finish in the women’s high jump, clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, while Erin Salazar placed third in the women’s long jump at 15 feet, 5.25 inches. Emma Bostic added a fifth-place finish in the women’s long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 3 inches.
On the track, Blakely Herman led a standout hurdles day for the Bucks. Herman finished second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 16.44 seconds and came back to place second again in the women’s 300-meter hurdles in 47.27, qualifying for regionals in both events. Kaylee Limbert added a fifth-place district finish in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.02, giving Buckeye another scorer in one of the meet’s most competitive races.
